Mental health programs in Indonesia have not become a priority program quantitatively and qualitatively. The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of mental health workers in dealing with people with mental disorders in the Public Health Center service (Puskesmas) at Lamongan, East Java, Indonesia. This research uses a phenomenological qualitative research approach. Sampling was done by purposive sampling with a sample of 15 participants. Data were collected using semi-structured observations and in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was carried out using the Colaizzi steps. Health workers assume the role of person in charge of mental health programs and communicate with sufferers and families. Health workers also encounter obstacles during running the program and get unfavorable care from people with mental disorders. However, health workers can overcome these obstacles or the ability of mental health workers. The results of this study are expected to be used as supporting data and as a reference to improve the quality of mental health services, especially in the work area of the Public Health Center services.
