Abstract
This research is motivated by the phenomenon that literature now has a broader role than just entertainment; it has also become an important tool in solving life problems, enlightening the soul, and therapy for the soul. The main objective of this research is to explore the role of literature in its therapeutic function towards the soul. This research uses a qualitative field design, with the research subjects being readers of literary works in Denpasar and Surabaya, Indonesia. Data was collected through open-ended and in-depth interviews with the readers, who provided insights into their experiences and views on literature. The results of the data analysis show that literary works play a significant role for individuals from various professions. More than just entertainment, literature contributes to enlightenment, enhances emotional sensitivity, and serves as a therapy for the soul. Literary works are proven to hone the feelings and sensibilities of their readers, providing new perspectives that can help them face life’s challenges. The findings confirm that literature has great potential as a therapeutic tool that supports mental health, by enlightening and comforting readers. This research highlights the importance of literature in modern life, where pressure and stress are increasing, making literature an essential element in the process of mental healing and well-being.
