Abstract

Consuming systemic drugs and topical treatment for recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) is not efficient and didn't cure the illness completely because it can't prevent the reappearance of this ulcer. To solve this condition, the new technology which could cure the RAU completely is needed. The erbium, chromium:yattrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er, Cr:YSGG) laser is the technology that able to cure RAU without showing sign of reappearance. The aim of this review is explained the efficiency of Er, Cr:YSGG laser and hyaluronic acid gel as RAU treatment. Er, Cr:YSGG is a medium infrared laser that provides precise hard and soft tissue cut by the interaction of laser energy with atomized water droplets on the interface of the tissue, causing rapid vaporization and micro-explosion that leads to high pressure on the surrounding structures. Moreover, it can provide analgesia via inhibition of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1(TRPV1) neural receptor. The combination with hyaluronic acid (HA) gel enables to control tissue hydration during inflammatory and response to tissue injury cause ulcer formation after laser treatment. The application of HA gel after Er, Cr:YSGG laser treatment promotes faster healing process of RAU.
