Abstract

The role of phasor measurement unit (PMU) in realizing the smart grid is very important due to its capability in providing synchronized measurement of real-time phasors of voltage and currents at the buses it is installed. Therefore, a proper and stable operation of the power system can be achieved. This paper extends the earlier work that use the binary particle swarm optimization method to solve the optimal placement of PMUs by considering the case of power flow measurement. To demonstrate its effectiveness, IEEE 57-bus system is used. The simulation results indicate that it can be used to determine the strategic placement of PMUs.
