Serum bicarbonate level and nutritional status in nondiabetic and non-dialysis stage 5 chronic kidney disease patients

Abstract

Introduction: Malnutrition is one of the common complication of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), although usually not diagnosed. This study analyzed the correlation of serum bicarbonate level and nutritional status in non-diabetic and non-dialysis stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease patients. Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study. Serum bicarbonate level was obtained from Blood Gas Analysis (BGA), and nutritional status was assessed using Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). Results: Forty non-diabetic and non-dialysis CKD stage 5 patients were enrolled in this study, consisting of 26 (65%) males and 14 (35%) females. The median age of this subjects was 52 years with range of 23-65 years. The mean serum bicarbonate was 14.2 ±3.89 mEq/L (range 6-22.4). Nutritional status of the subjects was divided into three groups, 8 patients (20%) were severely malnourished, 11 patients (27,5%) were mild-moderately malnourished, and 21 patients (52,5%) were well nourished. There was a significant correlation (r =-0.49; P = 0.001) between serum bicarbonate level and nutritional status. Conclusion: This study indicates that serum bicarbonate level was significantly correlated with nutritional status.
