Protective effect of okra pods methanol extract against lead acetate-induced testicular toxicity in mice

Abstract

In this study, we investigated the protective effect of okra pods (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) methanol extract due to the exposure of lead acetate in mice testicular. Thirty male BALB/c mice were divided into six groups: normal control, negative control (lead exposure), and treatment groups (lead exposure for 28 days and administration of methanolic extract at doses 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg for 28 days). Serum were evaluated the testosterone level. Furthermore, the testis were collected for testicular toxicity analyze. This study showed that administration of okra pods methanol extract (OPM) at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg increased significantly testosterone levels. It also increased the number of spermatogenic cells, Sertoli cells, Leydig cells, and thickness and diameter of seminiferous tubules due to exposure lead acetate. The results of this study reveal that OPM can reduce the influence of testicular toxicity induced by lead acetate in mice.
