Abstract
Objective: In this study, the authors chose robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) because they contain active compounds that have antibacterial activity, namely polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, caffeine, alkaloids, and chlorogenic acid. Material and Method: Periodontal disease-causing microorganisms in peri-implantitis pose a challenge when performing implant treatment as they can cause inflammation in the soft tissues surrounding the dental implant. Bacterial plaque is a known etiologic agent for peri-implantitis. A systematic review of 51 prospective longitudinal studies reported an incidence of peri-implantitis ranging from 0-14.4% around functional implants within 5 years of observation. Recently, the use of herbal ingredients has become an alternative and solution to reduce the use of harmful chemicals. Results: In silico studies show that Robusta coffee secondary metabolites have antibacterial potential through COX-2 inhibition. The results from the MIC and MBC tests indicate that Robusta coffee bean extract has antibacterial potential at a concentration of 25%. Additionally, the BSLT toxicity test results show that Robusta coffee bean extract does not possess acute toxicity potential, meaning it does not have a harmful impact on the environment. Conclusion: From all these data, it can be concluded that Robusta coffee bean extract has the potential as an alternative therapeutic support in the management of peri-implantitis.
