Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the primary causes of disability and death. Atherosclerotic occlusion and stenosis of peripheral arteries is one of the primary causes of PAD. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is still the first and most frequently used methodology. However, study about outcome of PTA in PAD management are heterogeneous. The aim of this literature review is to analyze outcome parameters assessed on the use of PTA in PAD. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: This study examined the literature collected from two main databases, namely PubMed and Google Scholar. Advanced search was performed on PubMed using the keywords (“outcome” AND “percutaneous transluminal angioplasty” OR “PTA” AND “peripheral artery disease” OR “PAD”). Advanced search was also conducted on Google Scholar with all of the words “outcome percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD)”. The displayed literatures were further selected based on the year of publication, by which we established a 10-year study from 2013 to 2023. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: This attempt resulted in 128 and 62 literatures gathered from PubMed and Google Scholar, respectively. Six suitable studies were found that discussed the use of PTA in PAD patients. The outcome of PTA use in PAD patients can be analyzed with various parameters. This literature review found that the outcomes assessed were the success of PTA at insertion in several arteries, a 5-year survival rate, ABI Index, occurrence of 5-year major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACE) and major adverse lower-limb events (MALE). CONCLUSIONS: There are various parameters used to assess the outcome of patients receiving PTA on PAD. Some of these parameters need to be considered further to determine the success of using PTA as the management of choice for PAD patients.
