Abstract
Introduction: In Indonesia, cardiovascular disease ranks first as the leading cause of death from 2009 to 2019, and high blood pressure or hypertension is known to be the main risk factor. Policies to reduce salt intake became a key strategy to prevent cardiovascular disease as it was identified that high daily sodium consumption was a major risk factor for increased cases of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of before and after the implementation of the REHAT MALAM (Remaja Sehat Kendalikan Asupan Garam) program on increasing respondents' knowledge related to sodium intake for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Method: This study used quantitative research with the design of One Group Pretest Posttest. The target in this study was grade 6 students of Hidayatul Ummah Elementary School Mulyorejo Surabaya totaling 31 students. The data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the statistical test Paired Sample T-Test with mean or mean and p-value. Result: It was found that 29 students (93.5%) experienced increased knowledge about salt intake to prevent cardiovascular disease. There was an increase in the average score of knowledge of 31.61 and there was a significant difference in the level of knowledge of students before and after being given the program (p = 0.000). Conclusion: The results showed that efforts to prevent cardiovascular disease through the REHAT MALAM program had an effect on increasing students' knowledge about salt intake control.
