Exploring User Perspectives on Biometric Security and IoT for Preventing Misuse of Priority Facilities

Abstract

Priority facilities, such as priority toilets, priority parking, priority elevators, and priority seating are essential for priority people, i.e., elderly, disabled, and pregnant women. However, these priority facilities often misuse by non-priority people, leading to significant inconvenience for those who genuinely need them, i.e., priority people. Traditional preventive efforts, such as signage and sporadic monitoring, are inadequate. This study explores the potential of biometric security and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to prevent the misuse. By surveying priority people, user perspectives are examined on the feasibility and acceptance of both technologies. The findings indicate strong acceptance for biometric security, with preferences for fingerprint recognition (67%), facial recognition (30%), and iris scanning (10%). IoT technologies are also viewed favorably for their potential to enable automated real-time verification and monitoring. The analysis identifies the most frequently misused facilities and the priority facilities that should primarily implement access control systems. This study provides insights for policymakers or facility managers on developing effective and user-friendly solutions. The integration of biometric and IoT systems represents a forward-thinking approach to managing public facilities, aligning with advancements in smart city initiatives and promoting more inclusive and accessible public spaces.
