Abstract

Excision wounds are wounds caused by sharp objects cutting the tissues. Chitosan in wound healing can accelerate cell regeneration (reepithelialization). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of shrimp shell chitosan on the reepithelization of the excision wound healing process in white rats. This research used 20 male rats. Rats divided into 5 groups: C- (excision wound + ointment base without shrimp chitosan), C + (excision wound + 10% povidone iodine), T1 (excision wound + shrimp shell chitosan ointment 1.5%), T2 (excision wound + shrimp shell chitosan ointment 2.5%), and T3 (excision wounds + shrimp shell chitosan ointment 5 %). Therapy was done once a day for 14 days. The results of the reepithelialization score were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis which showed a significant difference (p <0.05) and continued with the Mann-Whitney-U test. The T3 treatment group showed significant differences with the other groups, while the treatment group C-, C+, T1, T2 did not show significant differences. From the results of the study it can be concluded that shrimp shell chitosan 5% can affect the re-epithelization of the excision wound healing process.
