Abstract

BACKGROUND: A condition known as chronic kidney disease (CKD) results in increasing kidney destruction and necessitates the use of hemodialysis or kidney transplantation as kidney replacement therapy. Diabetic nephropathy from diabetes mellitus (DM), including types 1 and 2, which develops due to microvascular problems, can lead to cases of CKD. Due to immunopathology and coagulation cascades, DM circumstances might shorten the time needed to place the hemodialysis catheter. The patency of the catheter is hampered by these comorbidities, which further increase the risk of infection and thrombosis. This study aims to determine the difference in the durability of temporary hemodialysis catheter patency in DM and non-DM patients. METHODS: This study was an observational analytic study using a cohort prospective design to determine differences in the durability of temporary hemodialysis catheter patency in DM and non-DM patients. It was analyzed using the independent t and Mann-Whitney tests. In DM patients, the durability of patency is the fastest on the 7th day, whereas, in non-DM patients, the durability is the fastest on the 16th day. RESULTS: When viewed from the average value, the durability of the hemodialysis catheter in DM patients was 54.51 days, while in non-DM patients, it was 56.20. CONCLUSIONS: The conclusion was that there was no significant difference in the durability of temporary hemodialysis catheter patency between DM and non-DM patients due to infection or obstruction at RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya.
