Abstract
Introduction: One of the risks of a temporary HD catheter is the occurrence of hemodialysis catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) that contributes to HD patients’ morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the bacterial profile of CRBSI and risk factors of diabetes mellitus and hypoalbuminemia towards hemodialysis CRBSI. Methods: This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. All subjects of the study were examined for complete blood count, serum albumin, blood sugar, and blood culture. Results: This study involved 42 subjects, which consisted of 24 males and 18 females with mean age of 49.62 years. The results showed that blood cultures by gram-negative bacteria was 51.86% and gram-positive bacteria of 48.14%. The dominating bacterium causing CRBSI were Staphylococcus aureus, gram-negative bacteria by 25.9%. There was a statistically significant association between diabetes mellitus and hypoalbuminemia with CRBSI (OR = 3.896, P = 0.037; OR = 4.524, P = 0.023, respectively) Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus and hypoalbuminemia affect risk of CRBSI.
