Dependence of structural and magnetic properties on synthesis procedure in silver substituted cobalt ferrite

Abstract

This paper reports changes in the structural characteristics and magnetic properties of Ag0.03Co0.97Fe2O4 resulting from two different preparation procedures, namely sol-gel auto combustion and co-precipitation. XRD analysis confirmed that both samples had an inverse spinel cubic structure with a space group Fd-3m, similar to the usual cobalt ferrite structure. It is indicated that Ag cations substitute cations in the face center cubic-cobalt ferrite structure. Furthermore, the crystallite size obtained from the sol-gel auto combustion method was smaller (17.03±0.01) nm than from co-precipitation (23.21±0.01) nm. Meanwhile, the analysis of the FTIR results confirmed that both samples showed metal oxide absorption resonance at the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of typical cobalt ferrite. The VSM analysis results showed that the sol-gel method produced coercive field (HC=593 Oe) was greater than that of the co-precipitation method (HC=490 Oe). However, the saturation magnetization (Ms) for the sol-gel method, 31.95 emu/g, is smaller than the co-precipitation method, 38.75 emu/g. Ag0.03Co0.97Fe2O4 from the SG method had ratio values of I220/I222 and I422/I222 revealing that Co2+ ions occupy the octahedral sites while Fe3+ are scattered in the tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Meanwhile, Ag0.03Co0.97Fe2O4 from the CP method has a ratio value of I220/I222 and I422/I222 indicating that Co2+ has a strong preference for the tetrahedral site while Fe3+ is on the octahedral site.
