Abstract

The aim of thisstudy was to determine the Javaneseconcept of supernaturalism in Panjebar Semangat magazine. This work has evaluated the representation of supernaturalism and its relationship with ethics, values of present-day Javanese society and its meaning. This work has used qualitative research method. For this work, data was collected based in the form of popular culture texts. The data was analyzed qualitatively using Theodore Adorno technique. The sample of this study was Panjebar Semangat magazine of the year 2015.The contemporary of Javanese supernaturalism had been changed from past to the present. The supernaturalism formerly very non-material is transformed into high material and pragmatic in high commodified form of economic value. In Javanese’s cosmology, cyberspace and spirit world, small and great universe, rational and irrational world, invisible and visible world cannot be separated because it is interconnected with each other. These two worlds are reflection of Adorno’s negative dialectics which stated that things are in the sense which unnecessarily be regarded as nothing and irrational. The Javanese culture is hybrid culture where Javanese culture in response to the onslaught of various foreign cultures in global culture. The hybridation of Javanese culture from foreign and colonial cultures have become the strength of Javanese culture’s survival from past until present.
