Bullying Victimisation Effect at Physical, Phychological, and Social in Adolescence: A Systematic Review

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Bullying is an experience where a person feels persecuted by the actions of others and fears that the bad behavior will recur, leaving the victim powerless to prevent it. This study aimed to synthesize the effects of bullying victimization on biological, psychological, and social aspects in adolescence. It was conducted as a systematic review. Pre-defined keywords were searched in Science Direct and Scopus, covering relevant literature from any year. The first steps included selecting primary studies, data extraction, and assessing the quality of the included studies using PRISMA guidelines. The study presented the year and type of study, study design, sample size, sample characteristics, interventions, and results. Three key themes were identified from the original research: the effects of bullying victimization on physical, psychological, and social aspects. Thirteen studies were included in this systematic review. The review identified various forms of bullying behavior: verbal, physical, electronic/cyber, and relational bullying. Verbal bullying includes mocking, making fun of physical shortcomings, and using unpleasant words. Physical bullying involves hitting, kicking, pushing, and forcibly taking possession of others' belongings. Most bullying victims exhibit stress, anxiety, depression, academic problems, suicidal ideation, and psychosocial issues.
