Abstract

Understanding whether bioactive glass can be used as a promising endodontic material due to its properties and compositions. The study is a review about properties and compositions of bioactive glass. Data are collected from various scholar search engines, including Google Scholar, Elsevier, Pubmed, etcetera. The researches are conducted by the interest in restoration material, including meta-analysis, systemic review, review, and clinical reports in between last 10 years. Bioactive glass contains SiO2 (main), Na2O, CaO, P2O5, which are prepared using either melt-quenching or sol-gel methods. These compositions are able to degrade in the body fluid and allow the ion exchange to the surface of bioactive glass, inducing the formation of carbonated hydroxyapatite. Bioactive glass also has antimicrobial properties against pathogens, and does not give toxic effect to the body tissue. In dentistry, bioactive glass can be used as bone substitute in dentoalveolar and jaw reconstruction, implants, repair of periodontal bone defects, pulp capping treatment, root canal therapy, enamel remineralization, etcetera. Bioactive glass can be effectively used as an endodontic material due to its unique properties and compositions, inducing its ability to bond with bone and connective tissue without giving any negative reactions to the surrounding body tissue.
