Abstract

Allele frequencies for some short tandem repeats loci have been reported for the Indonesian populations. The Indonesian population consisted of various ethnicities. Further studies are needed to determine the most polymorphic loci for each subpopulation group or ethnic in Indonesia. We report allele frequencies and statistical parameters of 13 loci short tandem repeats (STR) loci determined in 25 unrelated individuals of the Minangkabau ethnic group in West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. We observe 88 alleles with allele frequencies between 0.02 - 0.36. D21S11 and FGA loci are the loci with the highest expected heterozygosity, power discrimination, match probability, and probability of exclusions for the Minangkabau ethnic group. The Chi-square test showed that all STR loci followed Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (p>0.05). All loci were highly polymorphic (PIC>0.5). The combined discrimination capacity of each locus in the population was 99.999%. The combined match probability was 1,089 x 10 -28. This study also found alleles that have not been found in study in Indonesia before, namely 24.3 in the FGA locus. The 13 STR loci are useful for forensic analysis and population genetic studies of the Minangkabau ethnic group.
