Abstract

Diah Arimbi introduces a woman novelist and poet from Indonesia, Abidah El KhalIeqy, who was the first to speak out in her writing about abuses of women: child marriage, marital rape, domestic violence, in ways that challenged orthodox interpretations as they existed in her country. She addressed women’s lack of awareness of their rights, be they to education, or of a reproductive nature, or sexual. Her writings caught women’s attention and gave them confidence to address these issues publicly, thus addressing the discrimination and injustices that had thus far escaped serious opposition.
