Merapi-Merbabu Manuscript Culture

Project Details

Description

This project seeks to dig deeper into the potential knowledge contained in the Merapi-Merbabu collection of manuscripts. The manuscripts from the Merapi-Merbabu collection occupy an interesting position in the history of Javanese literature. These manuscripts, which were produced between the end of the 15th and 18th centuries, are the link in the chain that connects the literary traditions of Old Java and New Java. When Th. Pigeaud (1967) coined the term "Classical Javanese Literary Renaissance", so the texts documented through the Merapi-Merbabu manuscript collection have a significant role as a source of connecting traditions. Apart from that, an extensive exploration of this treasure will open up one of the layers of history which has been considered a dark period in Javanese literature.
