Description of impact
In August 2024, a nationwide wave of civil resistance emerged in response to attempts to revise the Regional Election Law (UU Pilkada) following controversial Constitutional Court rulings. Amid this national momentum, I initiated and coordinated a local civic action under the #PeringatanDarurat in Surabaya—mobilizing citizens, students, and civic groups to publicly demand transparency, reject oligarchic interventions, and uphold constitutional democracy. The action, held at Tugu Pahlawan, was reported by multiple major national and local media outlets and then formed part of a broader pressure that amplified public opposition across regions. Although not the originator of the national movement, my role in translating mass aspiration into local mobilization contributed to strengthening civic participation and reinforcing constitutional discourse in policymaking at the national level.
This local intervention highlights the importance of scholar-citizenship in defending democratic norms through peaceful, visible, and coordinated public action.
